2013 Wellington Show Report

It goes without saying that when a Club pulls together, it pulls off a successful event … our 2013 Show!

Member enthusiasm and commitment was evident, not just eight months ago when planning first commenced but throughout our Show weekend and right up to Sunday 6.30pm with breakdown complete. Team-work at it's best.  Set-up day arrived and was over before we really knew it. This was a day of covering tables, assembling display cabinets and lighting, setting up microscopes and workshop equipment, labelling and photographing and plenty of other tasks. Traders were welcomed and left to the business of setting up their items for sale while members trickled into the hall throughout the afternoon and evening to settle into the task of preparing their individual displays.

Saturday morning and time to cast an eye around the hall – Victoria University setting up, last minute member display adjustments, a duster over the black tablecloths and we were ready. A fairly constant stream of visitors flowed through the door throughout each day and were treated to 49 member displays to view –each unique, making the People's Choice vote quite a challenge for some!

Hard to walk past our Dunedin displayer, Gladys Nilson, with her remarkably delicate soapstone flower carvings. The fluorescent display proved popular as did the Mineral Identification Competition. Those with an eye for detail enjoyed lookingthrough the microscopes and those with money to spend supported our Traders favourably.

Many visitors arrived with a box of material to be identified in their arms and some just produced items from their pockets or warm hand, keeping the Mineral Identification team hard at work!  Raffles, tumbled stones and crystal growing kits were purchased, along with books, loupes and fluorescent torches. GNS Science and Victoria University representatives easily shared knowledge and presented impressive displays. Humming of the sphere-making machine drew curious visitors to the Workshop area while the cafe in a quieter corner gave others an opportunity to relax and re-charge. A busy time for our 41 rostered Club members but not too busy to enjoy a Show Dinner with our traders on the Saturday evening.

Then it was Sunday with a smooth Breakdown signalling the end of Show 2013 and time to relax and reflect. This was certainly a Show to spend time at … so much to see and learn and, importantly, a chance to showcase our hobby to anyone and everyone.
